Police officer shot dead, another injured as violence rocks PDP primary in Cross River
Martins Mbang, a police officer, was shot and killed at the Peoples Democratic Party’s House of Representatives primary in Cross River State’s Obudu Local Government Area.
The primary election was held to nominate a candidate for the Obudu/Obanliku/Bekwara federal constituency in the 2023 general elections.
The police officer and his colleague were shot at the Handmaid’s International Nursery and Primary School on the hospital road, where the primary was to be held, according to reports.
According to Cross Rivers Watch, supporters of some of the hopefuls staged a demonstration and opened fire on police officers for inexplicable reasons.
Several bullets were fired throughout a six-minute period, which was described as stressful. The shooters were eventually chased away, and the PDP members planned their next moves.
SP Irene Ugbo, a spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the incident on Monday evening, May 23, saying one other officer was hurt and eight people were apprehended.
“One of our officers was killed, while another was hurt. The PPRO reported, “We have arrested eight people in connection with the event.”
She condemned the heinous conduct, saying that the violence had begun before the major polls had even begun.
